BIOgraphy

The name, The Canary Initiative, came about when Stefan overheard a couple of skiers in Aspen talking about the name back in 2018. They mentioned how it’s a program in Aspen whose main goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of the city. The skiers joked, “that would make for a great indie rock band name.” Accepting that as a challenge, Stefan kept the name with him while seeking out the members that would make up The Canary Initiative.

Fast forward to September 2020, Jeannine heard Stefan singing outside a café. Attracted by his music, she walked by to listen and gave him her phone number. A few days later they had their first performance together as an early iteration of the band, including Sarah Findley. A few months later, the pair began a relationship and founded The Canary Initiative with current members, Tristan Murphy (Drums / Guitar / Vox), Sarah Findley (Cello / BGV), and Charlie Hayden (Bass / Guitar).

The band recorded their debut single, ‘Time Moves,’ in 2022. Jeannine’s father, Lovell Anderson, recorded bass on the track, adding to the family band aspect.

Each member brings a unique perspective and skillset to the group, with influences from folk, rock, soul, blues, jazz, and classical. Their music is a cross between indie folk rock and neo-soul. The Canary Initiative is an American time capsule, which shares an honest and optimistic message of heartache, healing, hope, and faith. They hope to carry the torch of the namesake.
